This was a very difficult book to read -- horrible violent scene after horrible violent scene, all deeply and disturbingly depicted. You wonder how much punishment he can inflict on his characters, and through them, you, the reader. It is a book about endurance and survival, and you live that somehow reading it. But it was all so intensely realized and compellingly plotted, that you push through the pain -- and the occasional infelicitous sentence -- and feel that it was worth it, that you have read one of the more ambitious -- and sucessfully so -- novels you have read in a long time.
