I love picture books that tell quieter, more serious stories that stick with you. One of my favorite quotes: ""You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children." This is one of those books. I'd never heard about China's Sparrow War of 1958 before now, and I imagine that's true of a lot of folk. (Based on what I learned reading Factory Girls, I imagine many folk in China today would also have no idea.) History lessons aside, it's also a poignant story of what can happen when we deliberately skew the balance of nature. [Another book on the 2010/11 Bluebonnet list.:]
