I generally distrust corporations, view capitalism as inherently evil, all that good liberal type of stuff. Gain, however, did not solidify or augment my feelings on companies with its life history of Clare, or the story of the poor woman dying from cancer because of the evil corporation. I found the story quite engaging, and on a deeper level, its explication of American business left me more confused than ever about the grandeur, necessity, and awesome, terrible power of corporate America. If nothing else, this book definitely helped me understand on a deeper level what a corporation means.

As far as the novel goes, it was entertaining and interesting, but largely lacking, for me at least, any sort of emotional or narrative hook. I liked the book, but I didn't really get into the book. The split narrative was fun, and the story held plenty of emotion, but I failed to get excited about reading.
