I started out really liking this book and then became less enchanted with it as I kept reading. The main character is an older English gentleman with a gentile disposition and lovely wit, and there are important questions about prejudice and relationships that are explored. Yet I felt that some of the secondary characters in the story were unnaturally one-dimensional, and many of the developments in the plot were simply unbelievable. I enjoyed the writing style and loved the Major Pettigrew character, but in the end felt unsatisfied.
