The Black Moth is Georgette Heyer’s first novel, written when she was fifteen. It is an enjoyable romance but seems a tad overdone. I am not sure if this is because of her age in writing it or faithfulness to period details. I need to read another of her period romances to form a better judgment. That being said, I did enjoy this book. It is a typical romance: a worthy hero who is unable to pursue his love because of the tarnish, which is none of his own doing, on his good name. Likewise, there is the requisite cad who tries to steal the heart (or at least the virtue) of the hero’s love. For those who want a classic romance with out the worries associated with modern day varieties, this is a fun read. I would rate it PG because, of course, the cad is a cad.
