I bought this book to read on the plane and beach when I was on vacation. It fulfilled its job well, actually better than I had expected. The setting is wonderfully Gothic: an asylum for the criminally insane on a small island off the New England coast during a hurricane. What could be spookier? The plot, as is typical of this kind of mystery-thriller, is preposterous. That doesn't matter, as the story is so action-packed and intriguing that you suspend disbelief and keep plowing ahead. The story unfolds in a surrealistic vision, with plot elements included in flashbacks. Who really are the bad guys here? You'll have to read it to find out.
