this was a very difficult book to rate.
It is written as a story within a story.
The beginning was slow, tedious and repetitive , so much so that I almost gave up. I could hardly rate that part 2 stars.
Then the story took a turn and I became mesmerized and read it straight through.
The telling of the "fairy tale" I would rate 5 stars. The vivid description of russian life before and during the war was fascinating and emotional and heart wrenching;...I didn't want it to end.
But the ending was awful....soap-operish, contrived and unnecessary. For me, unbelievable.
The book should have ended when the fairy tale was at last told.
