This slim little chapter book by the Newbery award winning author is getting some buzz, so I picked it up. Schlitz says she wrote it for the "little girls who come in to the library wanting to read fairy books, so I felt I needed to offer them something lively."

Lively it is! Flora is a "night fairy" whose wings are destroyed by a hungry bat one evening. She finds a home in an abandoned birdhouse in a "giantess's" garden. (a human woman) Flora befriends a squirrel, whom she calls Skuggle, by asking to be able to ride him, in exchange for helping him get seeds from the bird feeder. Flora becomes fascinated with a hummingbird she sees in the garden, and after the hummingbird is caught in a spider web, she goes to its rescue. She tells the bird she will free her, but only if the bird will allow Flora to ride on her back at any time. The bird cannot promise but she pleads with Flora to help her so she can warm her eggs. Flora casts a warming spell over the eggs and then travels back to watch over the hummingbird, where the spider is about to wrap up and eat the bird. Flora pleads with the spider not to harm the bird, and he agrees. The bird awakes in the morning and carries Flora to his nest, where her new babies have hatched from the eggs.
