Comparisons to Harry Potter are inevitable, and while this book quickly comes up short, I can see the draw for younger readers. I'm inclined to love anything that refers to Ancient Greek mythology, and this has that in spades--the possibility for young misunderstood people that they too (just like Harry!) may have a secret ancestry and powers is likely tempting. I was a bit put off by a bit of the America-centrism (the Greek Gods have moved to New York because America is the center of Western civilization? Really?) and Riordan's easy explanations for Percy's ADHD and dyslexia (battle reflexes? a mind hard-wired for ancient Greek? ... the latter is misrepresentative of how dyslexia ACTUALLY works and a little patronizing, really), but Percy is generally likable and the book is fast-paced and filled with action. Not one of the best children's books I've read in a while, but enjoyable. I'm curious to see what they changed in the film, but I am skeptical of finding someone to go with me...
