** spoiler alert ** THIS book. Having literally just finished it and being emotionally overwhelmed I'm unsure if I can put my thoughts into words. But I will try.

This is a love story, but not a typical one, since it's written by Murakami. It depicts Toru, an introverted shy male who only had one real friend, and the friend's girlfriend, Naoko. They are brought together by the suicide of Kizuki (the aforementioned friend), but they find they don't often have a lot to talk about.

I guess this story hit me so hard because it was certainly one of unrequited love, and even though the reader is not led to believe it will be a 'happy ever after' type story, it does feel like a kick in the guts when Naoko dies. And I'll be honest, I cried.

Overall it is a stunning emotional masterpiece. I can't wait to read more from this guy.
