I read this many years ago and thought it was great. Didn't really care for it so much on the second time around. Perhaps I've grown up a bit, but I found the "hero" a cowardly jerk. I'm also less forgiving of the practice of giving modern sensibilities to period characters. If you can't deal with the mores of the time-period you've chosen, tweak it and make it a fantasy. That aside, I still have a fondness for the malloris and will probably work my way through the series again for old times sake. Audio-book Note: the female narrator's male chuckle comes across as a piggy grunt that I find very annoying.
