The 8th ASOUE book finds those remarkably resilient and self-reliant Boudlaires in a half hospital. Snicket continues his trend to move away from the formulaic plots of his first several books. "Formulaic" is a word that here that means that Mr. Poe puts the Baudelaire orphans in a bad situation, Count Olaf arrives in disguise to make it worse, and the Baudelaires must contend with well-meaning and not so well-meaning, but all blithely ignorant, adults while extracting themselves from their deplorable circumstances.
