A very rich evocation of the secret life of Juana la Loca, the last true Queen of Spain. Gortner rescues Juana from her maligned place in history, in which she was dismissed as a mad woman and swept under the carpet. He depicts her as a tragic heroine who makes the ultimate sacrifice for her country and to secure the throne for her son. I can't wait to read his book about Isabella of Spain, Juana's mother--a strong woman if ever there was one.
