Queen Elizabeth has never been brought to life quite like this. Kay won the Georgette Heyer award for this, her first novel, and rightly so. The book is methodically paced but never dull or draggy; her characters richly developed without bogging the reader down in the details, and the history spot-on accurate.

What makes this re-telling of the Queen's life stand out from other narratives, however, is how she is so strongly brought to life by Kay's writing. I was enthralled from the get-go and for days after finishing the book had the story whirling around in my head. I read so many books that this never happens--they're normally all but gone the moment I shut the cover.
