This is a pleasant read, clever and playful and a bit mischievous (even spiteful!--see last two pages) like the Greek gods themselves. Banville's prose is effervescent and makes me giddy. I almost hate to say it, though, but the book doesn't really add up to much. The Sea is the much better novel.
