I would have given this one another half a star if I could have. A charming, meditative, and yet slim novel published in 1980 that reconciles the English Country Novel with the aftermath of the horrors of World War I. It won the Guardian Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, yet I had never heard of it. Reading the introduction (after the fact, as I always do, to save myself from probable spoilers), I find that the author was quite an interesting man who, besides publishing other novels, also self-published a vast array of funny little 'tomelets' to sustain himself financially. I also find that a movie was made of the book in 1987 with Kenneth Branagh, the late Natasha Richardson, and Colin Firth! Jackpot!!!

P.S.: Drat! The movie has not yet been released on DVD.
