really liked it
bookshelves: fiction, classic

Unbelievably sad, depressing, tragic book. Steinbeck had a LOW opinion of society I think, and the book wallows in it. And sometimes I think he had the main character learns the completely wrong lesson at the end, since it was PEOPLE, and not the pearl, that was responsible for everything that went wrong. I'd wonder what the main character's life was like after the story ends, knowing that reaching out past his station would only bring ruin, but I think I'd just depress myself more.
