I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. It's still an honest review, but the FTC wanted you to know...
I won this book in a Firstreads giveaway. I plowed through it a lot faster than I expected, finishing it in a 24 hour period. John makes for an interesting protagonist--a 15 year old who has a hard time understanding emotion and is unable to connect with most people around him. He's interested in death and is fascinated by serial killers. He has set rules for himself, though, so that he doesn't become one. In the midst of his internal struggle, a serial killer begins attacking people in John's town, and he's got to figure out who it is.

The book takes a bit of a twist that I was not expecting at all (but I liked it). Around page 50 we get the first hint, sort of out of the blue, about who (or what) the killer really is. Very engaging, and a very entertaining read. I look forward to the other books in what appears to be a trilogy (but I really don't know what to expect in the books that follow).

Rating: A heavy PG-13 for violence and scariness.
