I love this book and quite frankly, who doesn't! The first time I read "The Notebook" it was recommended to me by my grandma. She was an avid reader, like me, and while I was in college, I borrowed a ton of great books from her. A few years after we both read it, we were discussing books. Although neither of us could remember the title, we both wanted to rave about this great book we read. The one I loved was the book about the guy who built/remodeled the old house for the girl he loved, even though they hadn't seen each other in years. My grandma loved the book about the elderly couple, where the man read the love story to his wife everyday because she had alzheimer's. It wasn't until grandma was gone that I realized, OMG we loved the same book, although it wasn't the same book. Since library school and other reader's advisory workshops, I've realized that no one ever reads the "same book", when they read the same book. We each bring to it our experiences and take away from it the parts that we relate to. I was in my early 20s and pining for my first love. My grandma was in her 70s and pining for her love, who had alzheimers and may not remember her from day to day. I haven't read the book since but it has it's own special place (shrine) on my bookshelf. And I bawl everytime I watch the movie, because I'm a hopeless romantic and now I see my grandparents in James Garner and Gena Rowlands.
