I haven't read this in a while, but remember liking it a lot, and I believe this is where Vonnegut makes a statement along the lines of - life is really like an episode of a show on television (or a movie?) - there's a bunch of meat in the middle, but rather uninteresting stuff at either extremity, and that's why they don't show it - and some musing to the effect of wishing that real life should work this way too, in terms of the hanging-on and getting old and withering away being just so much worthless time-filler.
