bookshelves: historical-fiction

Monique's world is turning upside down when the Nazi troops take over her town. She wakes up one night to find a young girl Sevrine sitting on her window seat and holding her cat Pinouff. Monique finds that Sevrine and her family are hiding in the cellar and her mother is helping them. They become friends and spend time together each night while everyone else is sleeping until one night when someone sees them. Now Sevrine and her family are not safe there.
This story deals with some of the cruelty of the Nazi invasion and how people were treated without getting too graphic. It would be good for students in 3rd- 6th grade. The pictures are typical of all of Patricia Polacco's books.
