This book is set in the 1500's.
Estrella de Madigal lives in a village in Spain where people who practice the jewish religion are closed in from the rest of the village. When harsh discrimanation towards Jews starts up again, Estrella world begans to change- she begans to lose her best friend, she finds out a deadly 500 year old family secret.
To protect herself, and her family, Estrella has to hide who she actually is.

The story line is really good, so I never got bored. The writing was good too, but i thought the pace of the story and the characters weren't that great.
Although one of the points of the story is "Life as you know it can change in an instant," Estrella's life changed too quickly. One day she was going to the village well with her best friend,it seems like the next day Estrella is running away from home to avoid persecution.
The characters were good overall, but they were to basic. In almost every book there is: a brother who the family favors, an understanding mother who is more like a sister, a forbiden love, a back-stabbing best friend, a harsh but-loving grandmother, and a grumpy grandfather. In a book that had a really surprising and great storyline, it was disappointing to have such mediocre characters
