** spoiler alert ** I re-read these two books in preparation for reading Finn by John Clinch (2007). Neither book was quite as wonderful as I remember, but overall both were quite good. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is by far the superior work, but that may only be because it is so much more in depth and reflective of the times. I absolutely love the characters of Jim and Huck, especially when they are in the midst of philosophical discussion and learning to be independently thinking individuals. I had forgotten just how completely frustrating the character of Tom Sawyer was when he kept Jim from being freed to meet his need for adventure - he needed a good slap. All this said - really very good.
