I enjoyed this book, but also found it painful. The main character, Sorel, suffers from the unfortunate combination of ambition and the ability to delude himself, which leads him to make extraordinarily stupid decisions. The barbed criticisms of the Church and Paris are funny but so black that I could only read so much at a time. There is a reason this book is a classic.
