Lisa's review of One Hundred Years of Solitude
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez
After being selected by my book club, I realized that I have read this book before a few years ago but couldn’t remember what the story was about. After reading it again, I came to the conclusion that I couldn’t remember the story because it’s a rather unremarkable book. The story of the seven generations of the Buendia family comes down to this: incest and fighting. How many times is too much before you get sick of reading about incestial relationships in a small town where nothing much happens? I was hoping this book would reach a climatic point or have something interesting happen to hold my attention but it didn’t. I know this book is a “classic” and I keep wondering – what am I missing???

Yeah, I'm still reading it and it is LONG...
There is a lot I do like about it ( characters, the feel of it almost being fairy tale like at times, the fact that it spans several generations etc ) but the incest, sexual deviancy, fact that everyone has the same name and I can't keep them all straight, does rub me the wrong way too.
I was thinking I was going to fall in love with this book as I've heard such amazing things about him as an author, and it's a classic and all....but I'm with you, I kinda don't get what all the hype is about.
