The Unicorn by Iris Murdoch
I've heard a lot of good things about Iris Murdoch & this is the only book I've read by her. It was not a very good first impression. It was mind numbing and depressing; I got so fed up with the characters that it was actually satisfying when almost all of them bit the dust at the books conclusion.

oh iris murdoch, why can't you be better? every book i've read of hers was like what you described. except the bell. that one was actually nice, if only for the visual of a nun diving into a lake in the nude. i've kept at it trying to read her books over the years though as one of my best friends loves her. maybe some day i'll see why...
Yeah--I've heard all these great things about her, but after reading The Unicorn...I don't know. Maybe I'll giver her another chance and read The Bell.
