** spoiler alert ** Jeannette Walls writes a memoir that is easy in which to get lost. We feel her pain and are in awe of her quick-to-forgive-and forget-childlike attitude in enduring hardships that many of us can barely imagine. It really makes you wonder about the pasts of those who, on the surface, seem so untouched by poverty. I can definitely appreciate the initial ideals her parents had to raise strong and self-sufficient children, but the extremes they go to in order to accomplish this are, at times, incomprehensible.
One detail in particular I wonder about it the (SPOILER ALERT!) way the parents handle their children's molestation episodes. It makes me think that they had been "pawed" as children, still it makes me wonder why they are not responsive regardless of their pasts.
