Charming is the word. More a series of connected short stories than novel, this is a surprisingly sweet and gentle story, considering that begins with a horrific murder and tells the story of a live orphan raised in a graveyard by the dead (and undead). Although not all of the episodes are of equal quality and the book would have benefited from some tighter editing, it is overall an entertaining and amusingly quirky work by the talented Mr Gaiman.
