Mary's review of The Year of Yes
The Year of Yes by Maria Dahvana Headley (Goodreads author!)
I had high hopes for this book because of the heavy promotion in magazines, on tv, and word of mouth. It wasn't what I had expected. I expected it to be a little more sociological and analytical about attraction, relationships, etc. Instead, it was styled as a memoir. However, Headley had trouble finding her voice and deepening her introspection. Rather than a memoir, it read like a novel written in the first person. I wanted her to switch to the third person so that I could get more into her character. As a memoir, that's a failure. Her scenes about dating, college life, and twenty-somethings were well-done and, because of her "real job" as a playwright, it should make a good movie.
