I read this partly because I was curious and it sounded interesting, and partly because I now work at a food website and was tired of doing things like this:

BOSSLADY: So, we're going to publish an interview with Jacques Pepin in May...

S: Who?

BOSSLADY: Kind of the most famous well-regarded chef? In the world? Ish?

S: (backpedaling so fast you can see smoke rising up from her shins) Ha! Oh, of course! I just...I thought you said Jackalope. And I was like... who taught those things to TALK, you know?

But so yeah. This is a good read. That said, it promises something different from what it delivers. I bought it because I thought the book would trace the history of gourmet eats/items/values into supermarkets and everyday dinners, which is a cool idea for a cultural history (basically, how we as a culture went from never having heard of salsa to having 25 diff...more
