In anticipation of an upcoming trip to Turkey, I read this novel by the Nobel Prize-winning author. I think it gave me some insights into the psyche of the country, so it was useful. Beyond that, it was very intellectual, not really plot or character-focused. I'm going to try to read Pamuk's collection of essays entitled (surprise, surprise) Istanbul before we leave, but I'm not sure I'd recommend them or any of his work to a general reader. It seems very Turkey-specific.
