This is a book about a basque town in Spain that wants it's independence from Spain. As a basque town, it is considered less than by the Spainish. The borders are hazy between it and France and the people just want to be left alone. However, during the second world war, it is bombed with such ferocity that one wonders who thought it was such a threat. The book is about the everyday lives of the people before the bomb and after the bomb. I didn't really feel the pain of the people, but I did like the surprise ending. Made me take a sigh of relief that at least one good thing came out of all the destruction.
