Cecily There's just a bit more to it than a sentient computer (in fact, when I reread it seven or eight years after first reading it, I'd completely forgotten about that aspect). ;)

Alex There is, but the sentient computer is - if I'm remembering right - the Big Reveal at the end that explains everything that came before it, and therefore renders it all retroactively dumb. For me. I'm especially susceptible to letting endings I don't like ruin entire books.

Cecily Yes, it is a bit deus ex machina, isn't it? (I was more fortunate than you in that it didn't spoil the book too much for me.)
