What I have always really liked about Banerjee Divakaruni's writing is her willingness to linger in the moment and to really draw out the sensuality of experience. However, in this book, I felt like it was almost too poetic, which is rare for me to say. Sometimes it felt like there was too much pondering and worrying in proportion to the action taken.

The story reads like a modern day fairy tale, and there are some really great stories in it. However, it felt like a long road to take for a fairly small result... I'm not sure the end justified all of the means that it took to get there.

In short, it's an enjoyable read, but I wouldn't go out of my way to read it. Her short stories are much better.
