I'm powering through this novel because I have a pathological need to finish the books I start. Just like with We Need to Talk About Kevin, Shriver is proving a frustrating author. Her dialogue is stiff and pretentious; the tennis player protagonist, 23 years old at the beginning of the story, sounds suspiciously like a middle-aged novelist as she tosses around similes such as "like a post-deadline rewrite." I admit I'm enjoying the milieu of the tennis world, but of course, tennis serves only as a backdrop & metaphor for Shriver's (not quite) subtextual wrestling with issues of relationships and gender inequity.
