I have wanted to read this for a long time and given a vacation in the Caribbean, it seemed the perfect time. There was an interesting forward and background information about the author which added to my reading experience. However I found the footnotes distracting and did not read them at all after the first 4 pages. I had every intention of reviewing them but after finishing the book, chose not to. Of course I have read Jane Eyre many times t/o my life and found this author's telling of Bertha's story to be curious in my past reading's context. Her intentions were obviously different as she explains but I found it not at all consistent with Bronte's tone or descriptions of Rochester and Bertha. In fact I found it quite different and not at all enjoyable. As she says, she wanted to save Bertha and all that she had been from a caricature of what she was made by Bronte and she did achieve that completely.
