it was ok
bookshelves: movie-too
Read in February, 2010

A student lent me his copy when he was finished with it, then it "disappeared" from my desk (probably now being secretly passed around among students who are excited by its sensational aspects) so then I had to buy it again to give back to him.

Have to say it missed for me. Although I liked some of the familiar underlying themes (empowerment through self-expression, redemption through literature, for two), the author didn't quite manage the trick of representing in writing the voice of an essentially illiterate narrator or her considerable progress into literacy and self determination. And the final revelation of Precious's earliest abuse memory did not come as a surprise to this reader, anyway, as I think it was intended to. Essentially, I liked the premise okay but take issue with some of the execution.

It's probably a better movie than book.
