An intricate and imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz. I especially liked the exploration of Ozian politics, as well as how the novel drew and expanded upon the underlying creepiness of the original story.

Unfortunately, the ending is something of a disappointment. Throughout the book the Witch is presented as highly principled, even when she does the wrong thing. Towards the end, though, her actions become increasingly indefensible and even absurd, without any real justification for the change.

Despite this, I thought it a clever and involving interpretation, and I'm definitely planning to seek out the sequel.
