Will is now a full-fledged ranger with his own fief, Seacliff. Alyss, now a courier arrives to send him on a secret mission to the north and Castle Macindaw. He's supposed to find out the truth about some rumors of sorcery and the illness of the Lord Syron. Disguised as a minstrel, he heads north, and so does Alyss, also in disguise. All is not what it appears when he arrives, but before he can sort it all out, he flees with Lord Syron's son leaving Alyss behind... to be rescued in the next book!
