As a sociologist he certainly gives a plausible set of explanations for one of the most significant changes in history. Those Christians who are working in a paradigm based on spiritualizing everything or at least placing the spiritual realm in priority over the physical realm (most flagrantly seen in the Gnostic movement) will probably react defensively to the rather effective sociological explanations for such questions as "Why do people convert?" For my part there is a reassurance that comes from understanding why people were attracted to Christianity in sociological terms - even in Darwinian "survival of the fittest" terms. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.
