really liked it
Read from February 12 to 14, 2010

This volume is the second of the two Firefly graphic novels. Freed from the constraints of the first volume (which attempted to bridge plot lines between the end of the series and the movie, and so had a lot of ground to cover), "Better Days" has a loose, episode-of-the-week feeling that makes it a lot more fun to read. The story is self-contained and could have been inserted anywhere in the course of the original series.

In summary: the crew manages to make a nice chunk of change for once, discusses what they would do if they were rich, and takes a vacation together. It's all kinds of sweet. The explanations of what each crew member would do with their money are neat pieces of character work, ranging from hilarious (River's daydream, as well as Shepherd Book's - both made me literally laugh out loud) to so-poignant-it's-even-more-depressing-considering-the-movie (Wash).

The artwork isn't quite as good as the previous volume, and since the colorist was the only person to change between comics... well. The faces are flatter and less realistically detailed. However, the artwork on the whole is serviceable good, only occasionally drifting away from the looks of the actors.

The dialogue is distinctively Firefly, and made me all nostalgic for the series again.

Four stars.
