It's true that there's a lot of heavy handed symbolism in this book, but the way Mawer used language (and I mean foreign languages)provided a subtle sense of nuance between characters (Czechs, Jews, Germans, German/Czechs, Americans...)that I enjoyed very much.
I also appreciated Mawer not passing judgment (for the most part) on his characters. Besides the central characters, there were plenty of minor supporting characters who were interesting to watch evolve.
