I'm probably being too harsh on this book. Probably, I should give it four stars. But, an elder brother and an older neighbor both pushed this book like it was really boffo, and sorry you two aging baby-boomers, but your reading recommendations are not so mucking fuch.

On the downside, the book is detail after detail after detail:

From page 186: "Blomqvist said with a smile that he was having the most trouble remembering the names of all the relatives." You can say that again. New rule: Think long and hard before taking up a book with a family tree at the beginning of the book.

From page 573: "It was a brick of a book, 608 pages in paperback." Well, look who'se talking...this from a book that's 590 pages in paperback.

So, be prepared for a major undertaking if you read this book.

On the upside, though, the book does finish very strong. And that's a major, major upside. Still, Sidney Sheldon would've delivered something more satisfying in 350 pages of easy reading.

The book is the first of a trilogy. It stands on its own, though. I don't plan on reading the other two books in the trilogy, thus, no 4th star.
