a disturbing topic handled well. "after" attempts to answer the question "why would a woman dump her own newborn in the trash"? which is, surprisingly, a relatively common occurrence. our main character is an otherwise upstanding citizen; if anything, she is her own worst critic. naturally, it's difficult to relate to her situation, but efaw manages to create a sympathetic character who has simply made a series of increasingly bad choices. of course, since nothing happens in a vacuum, the book also delves into the circumstances that contribute to devon's choices. i felt as thought the emotional and legal tone of the novel were spot on. devon came across as fully believable, if mired in denial.
