SOMEWHAT LESS THAN EXPECTED.

“Before I was Willow, I was Weed.”—page 3

Although an enjoyable and entertaining enough read, with a great opening sentence (quoted above), Anchee Min’s novel, ‘Pearl of China,’ a fictional biography of Pearl S. Buck, was less engaging than I had anticipated. Somehow I just never was able connect with either the characters or the story.

Recommendation: A worthy read, but not the compelling barn-burner I was expecting it to be.
