As the Germans move into Russia during World War II, two Russian boys try desperately to avoid capture by the Germans and complete an almost impossible mission to avoid execution by the Russians. Sounds funny, right? Well through often sad and gruesome action, it is sometimes! At its core, it’s a sweet buddy story between a wise-cracking ladies man who also happens to be a Russian deserter and a less experienced but endearing 17-year-old. This book gave me a new slice of WWII history and would be a good recommendation for a high schooler (especially male).
