Coarser and more explicit than other natural eating memoirs I've read, Novella Carpenter pulls no punches in her descriptions of butchering and preparing the whole animal for food. She is a gutsy woman, no pun intended. I also appreciated her perspective as a low-income inner city resident. Though she cares about the health and well-being of her animals, she's no fuzzy-cuddly PETA member. This is the real thing - growing food to live.
