really liked it

Sometimes I think the reason I stay away from contemporary fiction is not that I am too busy secretly imagining myself as a sorceress/flapper/Lady Dedlock, but because I am so consistently flummoxed both by whether something so untested by time will actually be worth my time (a ridiculous thought, I realize, from someone who regularly fritters the days away with, like, curing bacon or watching Clueless), and by the wide variance of reviews and opinions the newest books always elicit. I am here to tell you that A Gate at the Stairs is about the worthiest investment of your precious (or not) attention that you can make, and that out of all the different things written about this book and Lorrie Moore, only the most adulatory ones are correct.
