I don't think it's giving away anything to say that this book has a lot of human suffering in it, like all of O'Brien's recent novels. This one in particular struck a little too close to home for me, because the main character was, for a good portion of the book, a young husband and father like myself. It was very hard to read. In fact, my gut response was honestly to become angry at the author for what he put his character through. I certainly will never reread it.

But it's probably a work of great genius.
