There are, by PRC estimates, 130 million migrant workers in the cities of China. Last year the NYT reported that 20,000,000 of them are now without work. I met a large gathering of such workers during an excursion to Xian in 2005. Since that evening, I've been wondering about the fiction that could come out of that epoch of demographic upheaval. Xiaolu Guo paints a realistic portrait of one young woman migrant to Beijing in _Twenty Fragments..._ Excellent picture of contemporary China.
